OPAL
At Bentley Heath, we are developing our approach to play through the OPAL programme, aiming to ensure that our children enjoy lunchtimes that are more active, positive and socially enriching.
We know that play is a crucial element of a healthy and fulfilling childhood. As a school, we are committed to offering high‑quality, sustainable play experiences for every pupil. By designing thoughtful outdoor spaces and providing a wide range of equipment and resources, we create inclusive opportunities that allow all children to explore, imagine and engage in meaningful play.
We believe that play supports children’s overall wellbeing, helping them to become confident, creative, independent, adaptable and socially aware, as well as enabling them to understand and manage risk. These attributes complement our school values of kindness, respect, honesty, commitment, cooperation and responsibility.
Children can spend as much as 20% of their time in school playing which is the equivalent to around 1.4 years so it is vital that this time is intentionally planned for. Research shows that high‑quality play enhances problem‑solving abilities and provides essential opportunities for language growth and social interaction. When play provision improves, children and staff alike tend to be happier. Better play leads to fewer behaviour concerns, stronger attitudes towards school and improved learning and skill development.
The OPAL approach is founded on the belief that richer, more engaging and more active playtimes lead to healthier, happier children—and that happier, healthier children bring improved learning, more effective lessons, fewer avoidable behaviour issues, fewer accidents, and a more positive atmosphere for everyone.
Our parents value play because it develops:
- Friendship and social skills
- Emotional skills – regulating feelings, expressing themselves, taking a mental break
- Physical health and energy release
- Self‑control and conflict resolution
- Awareness of the natural world – being outdoors, exploring nature

Key Information:
At Bentley Heath we go out to play in any weather, so need to be ready for this. The field can get very wet and muddy, so your child needs a pair of wellies and waterproof coat/ All in one in school to be able to use the field. The wellies will then stay in school, in our welly stores, so children can access them whenever they need them.
