Music
At Bentley Heath Primary School we hope to foster a ‘lifelong’ love of music to our pupils through our music curriculum. We believe that music has an integral role in helping children feel part of community and building confidence, therefore we create opportunities for children to play, perform, create and enjoy music both in the classroom and to an audience. In lessons, in collective worship and on external school trips we give children opportunities to listen to a wide range of music and allow them to begin to appraise a range of music genres.
‘Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity’ (The National Curriculum)
The Kapow music scheme is used from Reception – Year 6 which ensures a wide exposure to different genres of music, with lots of practical opportunities to explore and develop as musicians and singers. Each unit of work builds on skills and knowledge within listening, composing and performing.
The school also has whole class ensemble teaching in Years 3 where children are taught string instruments for a school year. These lessons incorporate teaching musical notation, singing, as well as learning to play an instrument. Follow on group and 1:1 peripatetic music lessons are also available to pupils to continue to develop their skills and ability on a musical instrument the following year. Opportunities are taken to perform throughout the school year in class, in whole assemblies to parents and the wider community.
Additional opportunities are offered in music, such as the key stage 2 choir which performs regularly in school and at events in the local community.
